The Sigma Chi Alumni Chapter of Kansas City held its 14th Annual Sigma Chi Miracle Classic at Leawood South Country Club on Monday, September 24, 2007. Over the past fourteen years, Greg Kallos (Alpha Xi '53) has been a driving force behind this project. Greg was again instrumental in kick-starting the process for the 2007 event which was a huge success. This event hosts the largest gathering of Sigma Chis in the metro area where approximately 2,000 Sigs reside. Twenty-two Chapters were represented at this reunion. Most importantly, this event has contributed over $75,000 to the health and happiness of local hospitalized Children at the K.U. Children’s Center and Children’s Mercy Hospital! We are fortunate to partner with The Children’s Miracle Network to make all of this possible.
President Tim Haverty introduced Grand Trustee Bob Schock and newly elected Grand Praetor of Kansas/Nebraska, Todd Mendon. Also in attendance were invited undergraduate golfers from KU and MU continuing our communications with undergraduates. Although we had many winners in a variety of golf categories, our chapter was the biggest winner of all as we were honored to have Sig Dan Rooney, Kansas University ’95 as our special guest. As a Captain of the Oklahoma National Guard, Dan is an F-16 Pilot, an Iraq veteran, a PGA golf professional, the founder of Patriot Day, September 1, 2007 and the Fallen Heroes Foundation. Dan is a dynamic young man of 34 who mesmerized our dinner audience. He has accumulated high honors in College, in Golf and in the Military. His message that evening contained snippets of his Iraq experiences, videos of his participation in the war and details of his foundation. The first Patriot’s Day was observed in September of 2007 and raised more than $500,000 to be distributed to families of soldiers killed or wounded in the war. His Fallen Heroes Foundation distributes its funds to children of fallen heroes for their future education. The crowd of Sig's honored Brother Rooney with a standing ovation in appreciation for Dan’s in all of his endeavors.
As the largest gathering of Sigma Chi Alumni in the KC area each year, this event has provided not only a great alumni gathering, but also funding for area Childrens Miracle Network projects for the last fourteen years. Plan to join us next year, get out for a day and join us on the course for golf, a drink (or three), and some great brotherly fun and laughter.
Not a golfer? Join us next year for cocktails, steaks, spirit (and spirits), and fun. Just being around the brothers makes for an enjoyable evening.
Our 15th Annual Sigma Chi Miracle Classic will be held on Monday, October 6, 2008 at Milburn Country Club. Registration begins at 11 am with lunch and a putting contest beginning at 11:30 am. Shotgun start at 1:00 pm with cocktails following at 5-5:30 pm and dinner at 6:30 pm
